Details
[Edit]This version of the Willem Breuker Kollektief includes highly entertaining vocalist Loes Luca on four of the 13 tracks. As with so many of the recordings by this orchestra, there is a mixture of Breuker originals and an eclectic sample of tunes from a variety of genres. "Yes, We Have No Bananas" is given a unique treatment, with vocals from Breuker, a ukulele solo by trumpeter Boy Raaymakers, and a delightful singing saw exposition by Lorre Lynn Trytten. Rossini's "Cavatina Figaro" is re-arranged by trombonist Bernard Hunnekink and given new lyrics, which are sung by Luca. Although much of the music has a show tune aura, there are strong jazz improvisations from Alex Coke on tenor sax, Nico Nijolt on trombone, and Breuker on soprano and tenor saxophones. The heart of the album is Breuker's nearly 30 minute, five-part suite, "Hunger," which features some fine, tightly worked, light-hearted arrangements by the composer. Breuker's many fans will not be disappointed.
