Representing for Houston, Willie D (a.k.a. Willie Dee) was a Gold Gloves–winning youth boxer before he set his sights on the mic and hooked up with Rap-A-Lot Records. Though he's best known for his work with The Geto Boys (alongside Scarface and Bushwick Bill), he also put out several excellent solo albums, starting with this one. Originally released in 1989, Controversy is relatively short at just 12 tracks. But it's absolutely banging from start to finish, flaunting minimalist but still-funky production and hard-hitting rhymes about the his magical ways with the ladies ("Kinky," "I Need Some P*ssy," "F*ck Me Now"), neighborhood pride ("5th Ward"), and demolishing racists ("F*ck the KKK"). Though some of the beats are slightly dated, his no-holds-barred lyricism remains untouchable to this day. Other key joints include "Bald Headed Hoes" and the much-loved early Geto Boys single "Do It Like a G.O."
