Once established as a star in his own right and not just a songwriter to the stars, Willie Nelson was determined never to be pigeonholed into a single genre. With his capable backing group the Family Band in tow, in 1976 he cut The Troublemaker, his first all-gospel album that stylistically bases itself in the familiar arrangements of country music while reaching for the spirited choruses of exultant gospel. Nelson will never be confused with a brawling R&B singer rescuing his soul — even at his most rapturous he sounds mildly sedated — but he brings a learned balance to these traditional standards. “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” is the most obvious track, the obligatory campfire gospel tune, while “Whispering Hope,” “In The Garden” and “Precious Memories” are deep, heartfelt renditions that Nelson delivers with warmth and modesty. “Uncloudy Day,” “There Is A Fountain” and “Where The Soul Never Dies “ represent the brighter, spirited end with rousing ensemble playing and singing throughout.
