Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes scholar, an Army pilot, and a janitor before he established himself as one of the early ‘70s most innovative country songwriters, writing songs that merged the personal with the universal for country in much the way Leonard Cohen split open folk music. Though he continued as a country performer and eventually landed in Hollywood, Kristofferson’s true legacy has been a handful of country’s finest compositions that have been covered by hundreds of artists, most notably Johnny Cash, Ray Price, Janis Joplin and Willie Nelson. Released in 1979 at the height of Nelson’s first wave of mainstream popularity, …Sings Kristofferson is an intelligent, smartly produced collection of the songwriter’s most notable compositions. It’s hard to argue with “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “For the Good Times” or “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” tunes that carry with them a sense of living and dread that walk hand in hand into a world rescued by an impeccable sense of melody.
