A hydra may be known for its many heads, but it's a monster at heart. This makes the mythical beast a great namesake for Within Temptation's sixth studio album: a ferocious, genre-spanning spectacle. Having pushed the limits of symphonic metal over the course its decade-plus career—2004's A Silent Force featured an 80-voice choir, while 2011's The Unforgiving accompanied a comic book and film series—the band continue to step up their game here, enlisting guests ranging from former Killswitch Engage vocalist Howard Jones to rapper Xzibit and Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner, whose "Whole World Is Watching" does indeed sound like his former band. The single "Paradise (What About Us)" is signature Within Temptation, featuring soaring guitars, a string section, and the dueling pipes of vocalist Sharon Den Adel and Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen; they sound like a pair of valkyries fighting it out on the lip of a volcano. The bonus track version of Hydra features 8 additional tracks, including covers of songs originally performed by Lana Del Rey and Imagine Dragons, as well as audio commentary from band members den Adel and Robert Westerholt.
