Zachary Richard is been among Cajun music's finest performers during the 1980s and '90s, and this late-'80s session is one of his finest. The 12 tracks include hot versions of "Jolie Blonde," "La Valse de Grande Riviere," and "Ma Petite Fille Est Gone." Richard also demonstrates his country proficiency with a heady cover of Johnny Horton's "The Battle of New Orleans," as well as "Big River" and "Take Me Deep (Song for C)." The Bon Ton Playboys also include outstanding musicians in fiddler Rufus Thibodeaux, saxophonist Pat Breaux, and keyboardist Craig Lege, with Richard doubling on Acadian accordion, harmonica, and acoustic guitar in addition to doing leads. This is alternately spicy and reflective material, providing a good look at Cajun music's past, present, and future.
