From the band's tiny Isle Reunion home in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Ziskakan has been producing revolutionary roots pop since 1979. But this effort, recorded in Senegal, was their first to reach American ears. Over the course of decades of touring, frontman Gilbert Pounia had collected numerous instruments from other cultures, including various flutes and drums, and began incorporating them into Ziskakan's unique sound. The influences garnered through the group's travels are readily apparent in that sound, which mixes traditional hand drum rhythms and instruments with Western pop elements (bass, electric guitar, a horn section) and beautifully arranged vocal harmonies. The album also features a guest appearance by legendary Senegalese singer Baaba Maal on a song dedicated to him.
