[Edit]This set compiles two different Fontana albums that Zoot Sims issued from his debut performance at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in November of 1961 — he was the first American ever to appear there. The first was At Ronnie Scott's (Fontana mono TFL5176/stereo STFL588), while the second was Solo for Zoot (Fontana 680 982). Sims' band for three evenings was pianist Stan Tracey's trio with bassist Kenny Napper and drummer Jackie Dougan. On two other tracks he appeared with Scott's and saxophonist Jimmy Deuchar's quintet. Placing him on eight of the 11 tracks here, he delivers big on all his performances. Most notable are the quartet readings of "Love for Sale," "Autumn Leaves," Stompin' at the Savoy," and "Somebody Love Me," though his interplay with Scott's and Deuchar's group on "Desperation" is quite interesting. Filling out these tracks are two by Scott's and Deuchar's quintet, including the classic "Haunted Jazz Club." The other two tunes are by altoist Harold McNair and his quartet, which featured master drummer Phil Seaman. "Tangerine" cooks. For Sims fans, the inclusion of material from the other two bands on these dates doesn't distract but lends it the historical weight it deserves.
