Braxton Hicks

Realizing that the best way to hear the type of live music that they liked was to make it themselves, Carrie Baith (vocals, guitar), Bill Bush (guitar), Roger Hillis (bass), and Rod Whisner (drums) formed the indie pop/rock band Braxton Hicks in the summer of 1994 in Dover, DE. The band performed at clubs up and down the entire East Coast as well as performing larger events such as the Cutting Edge Music Conference in New Orleans and the esteemed South by Southwest Music Conference. They self-released a five-song EP, dissolve, in 1997. Two singles off the EP, "Starry Eyes" and "Deep," gained considerable airplay on regional commercial and college stations. (The latter was called "...one of the greatest songs I've heard since the Pixies released Surfer Rosa..." by one programming director.) Braxton Hicks also had tracks on numerous CD compilations, including the 58/59 Records/Tortilla Records music sampler Rosetta Stone — Explosion 1997, the Philly Music Scene 1996 compilation, DC's Frozen Tongue compilation and the Magnet Indie Music Sampler, Vol. 5. With new bassist Bill Degnan, the band signed to Miracle Baby Records at the end of 1997 and released its debut full-length CD, Where the Sky Meets the Ground, in September 1998. Whisner was replaced by new drummer Chris Lausch following the recording; at the same time, original bassist Hillis returned to the fold, prompting Degnan's exit.
