Biography
[Edit]Calennig have been the foremost folk band in Wales for more than two decades. In addition to five albums, the group has been featured in two theater-based shows, "Trade Winds", which compiles early-twentieth century stories and sea chanteys by Rees Baldwin, and "A Tale Of Two Rivers". While most of its concerts and dance events, known in Wales as "twmpath" are performed as a duo featuring former Swansea Jack multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Mick Tems and Anglo-concertina and spoons player Patricia Carron-Smith, Calennig is often expanded to include such musicians as Iolo Jones (fiddle) of Ar Log and The Hennesseys, Peter Davies (bombardes, bagpipes and woodwinds) and Mike Kennedy (bass). The group's debut album, "Songs And Tunes From Wales", released in 1980, reached the top ten on the music charts compiled by British music magazine, "Melody Maker". Since their third album, "Dwyddiau Gwynion Ionawr/Snowy Days Of January", released in 1985, Calennig has recorded at the Sain studios on the Llyn Peninsu a in Gwynedd, Wales. Known as "one of Wales' most traveled bands", Calennig has toured New Zealand three times and has traveled to the United States twelve times.
Both Tems and Carron-Smith have been active outside Calennig. Carron-Smith is known as one of the most exciting dance callers in Wales, while, Tems has composed material for a choir, Cantorian Creigiau, and for such shows as "Caradog: The First Welsh Hero!", "The Price Of Everything" and "Aladdin". The shows have showcased Carron-Smith's skills as an actress.
