Biography
[Edit]Initially a throwback to the Manchester scene, specifically the sound of the Smiths, Chapel Club formed in the summer of 2008 in London. Guitarist Michael Hibbert founded the group along with drummer Rich Mitchell, vocalist Lewis Bowman, and childhood friends Liam Arklie (bass) and Alex Parry (guitar). After much debate, Chapel Club were ultimately named after St. Luke’s Church, where the band practiced. After the group made waves in England with live performances, debut single "Surfacing" was released at the end of 2009, and was followed up with a second single, "O Maybe I," on East City Recordings in February 2010. Chapel Club continued touring throughout the year while recording their atmospheric debut album, Palace, which was released in early 2011. As newer material made its way into their live sets, it was clear evidence of the band's decision to embrace a more synth-oriented, electronic pop sound. "Good Together" — their first single to display this alternate approach — appeared on Ignition Records in January 2013, before their eagerly anticipated album of the same name was issued that summer. The samples, distorted synths, and innovative production techniques which prevailed on Good Together, underpinned Bowman's playful and soul-searching lyrical contribution to the record. ~ Jason Lymangrover & James Wilkinson, Rovi
