Biography

[Edit]

Playing a spirited mixture of rockabilly, R&B, garage rock, and blues, Cowbell is a duo from London comprised of Jack Sandham on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, and Wednesday Lyle on percussion and vocals. Cowbell's story begins in 2009, when Sandham, a veteran musician who previously fronted the group Great Bear and had been working as a solo act, learned that his longtime friend Lyle had taken up drumming. Sandham and Lyle got together to jam, and he was impressed with the way her solid, uncluttered percussion work blended with his roots-friendly guitar playing. The two decided to work as a team, and only a month later, they played their first show after writing a batch of songs. In the summer of 2010, Cowbell released their debut recording, "Oh Girl," a 7" single on Stove Pony Records; the A-side picked up some high-profile radio airplay on BBC 6 and XFM, and a second single, "Never Satisfied," was issued by the Too Pure Singles Club in late 2010. "Never Satisfied" was also well received on radio, and the band were invited to tour with Cast as their opening act after lead singer John Power saw them on-stage. Cowbell returned to the studio to cut a third single, "Hanging by a Thread," which they released through their own Cool Jerk Records label in the spring of 2011. After the enthusiastic public reception to their first three singles and an increasingly busy schedule of live shows, Cowbell attracted the attention of long-running punk and roots rock label Damaged Goods, who signed the band and released their first fell-length album, Beat Stampede, in October 2012.
