Biography
[Edit]Eureka Birds are an atmospheric indie pop act from Baltimore, Maryland whose lush, low-key sound has won them a significant following on the East Coast. Citing the Decemberists and Radiohead as key influences, Eureka Birds were formed in 2007 by singer, composer, keyboard player, and multi-instrumentalist Justin Levy, though he had been writing songs that would form the project's repertoire since 2004. After Levy partnered with guitarist Dave Rogoza, the two recruited a pocket-sized orchestra, complete with strings and horns, to record Eureka Birds' self-titled debut album in 2008, which was produced and recorded by Tyler Watkins of Margot & the Nuclear So and So's. In 2010, Eureka Birds went back into the studio with Watkins to record an EP, Eureka!, which featured a more spare and stripped-down musical approach. (Watkins also played bass on the Eureka! sessions.) While the group toured in a variety of configurations (sometimes as a full band, sometimes as a two-piece with Levy joined by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Collins), by 2013 Eureka Birds had established a stable lineup, with Levy and Rogoza joined by bassist Scott Hesel and drummer Dan Vellucci. This edition of the band went into the studio, with Watkins once again at the controls, to cut their second full-length album, Strangers. A single, "Mila Don't Make a Sound," was released in August 2013, with the accompanying album due the following October.
