Biography

[Edit]

Hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand, drummer/vocalist/songwriter Hamish Kilgour formed the Clean in 1978 with his brother David, going on to be an eternally obscure but massively influential group and one of the front-runners for the sounds that came to be known as kiwi pop, college rock, and eventually alternative and indie rock. The Clean went through various lineup changes early on and would go through long stretches of inactivity or hiatus. Kilgour stayed active in various bands and projects through much of the '80s, '90s, and beyond, deeply woven into the Flying Nun Records scene that helped spawn like-minded acts like the Bats and the Chills. Along with brother David, Hamish worked in wistful, jangly tones similar to the Clean with the Great Unwashed in the early '80s, and went on to do time with bands such as Bailter Space and the Moles. In 1990, Hamish formed Monsterland, playing guitar alongside guitarist/bassist Lisa Siegel. The band formed in Auckland, New Zealand, but when they moved to New York City in 1991, they quickly changed their name to the Mad Scene, discovering there was already a New York band using the Monsterland name. Hamish continued playing and recording sporadically with the Clean as the decades went on, and in 2014 released his first proper solo album. Released on the Ba Da Bing Records imprint, All of It & Nothing featured help on Kilgour's original tunes from Brooklyn veteran indie rockers such as Gary Olson and Miggy Littleton.
