Biography

[Edit]

John Wubbenhorst was born in Norwalk, CT, November 28, 1957. He started his musical journey playing guitar and piano, but gravitated toward the metal alto flute as he learned from Juilliard instructor Kim Haley and took composition tutelage from Darius Brubeck. At 15 he enrolled in the Berklee College of Music summer program, where he discovered East Indian ragas and the mysterious spiritual folkloric sounds of the Pacific Rim. His next few years led him to the University of Iowa, where he studied with Roger Mather, then to Iowa's Maharishi International University, followed by the Washington, D.C., beltway area in the 1980s, where he encountered practice and exercise with several Indian musicians who were experts in their native musics. In 1992 he left the U.S. for India to study with the transverse and bansuri flute master Hariprasad Chaurasia, and played the wood flute fairly exclusively with Chaurasia for two years. He then followed his teacher to Rotterdam, working with him in 1995. Upon his return to America, settling in the D.C. suburb of Fairfax, VA, Wubbenhorst refined his concept of world and ethnic fusion music to include classical and chamber musics, modern jazz and fusion, new age, and broader ethnic rhythms and melodies. A partial list of the musicians he has collaborated with includes Paul Horn, Paul McCandless, Howard Levy, Larry Coryell, Sandip Burman, Jack DeJohnette, Paul Bollenback, and Dave Pietro. ~ Michael G.
