Biography

[Edit]

Julius Dobos started his studies on the piano with five years old. His interest in composing began after winning several competition awards. After completing his musical education in Budapest, he went to Germany to study soundtrack composing. In 1995, he made his debut with a collection of pieces called "Mountain Flying," which were broadcast on Hungarian radio and television.

After several commissions for short pieces and logo music (including the impressive choir theme for the Corvin Budapest Multiplex Theater), he composed "Connecting Images" at Nokia's. Dobos worked with Grammy Award-winning Marta Sebestyén and the Budapest Monteverdi Choir. The CD was a great hit and sold 60,000 copies in Hungary.

In the same year, due to the success of "Connecting Images," he was asked to write an original Hollywood-style score for Europe Express, the first Hungarian action-adventure film of the '90s. The soundtrack became one of the most popular topics of conversation at the 30th Hungarian Film Festival. Later, he became involved with several projects, including the music for a radio-play about the Balkan wars, and the original score for the U.S. short film Black Strawberries, the score for Thend and others.

While writing music for film, the composer began to work on his long-standing dream, "Mountain Flying," based on his debut work of the same name. He recorded it four months later with the North Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, the Monteverdi Choir, and several guest artists, including Marta Sebestyén. The album became an international success and reached five continents of the world.

In the new millennium, Dobos kept on writing music for films — mostly for U.S. market — and working on his own pieces. His works reveal a distinctly European flavor, a legacy of his solid musical education, both theoretical and practical, which has helped him to form and define his personal musical criteria and his own, distinctive style.
