Biography
[Edit]The traditional music of Norway is a springboard for the improvisations of tenor saxophone and ram's horn player Karl Segrum. While Dirty Linen praised him for his "atonally jazzy meanderings (that) bring traditional Norwegian folk music squarely into the 21st century," Cadence explained, "at the heart is passionate yet restrained blowing," and Listen to Norway Magazine proclaimed, "we are witnessing the devil fiddler's answer to John Coltrane." The recipient of an EDVARD award (the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammy awards) for his composition Tya in 1998, Seglum is known for his command of breath, resonance of sound, and syncopated rhythms. Seglum has mostly performed in concert with drummer, percussionist, and jew's harp player Terje Isungset, although, his albums have included such stellar instrumentalists as Hardanger fiddler Hakon Hogemo, synthesizer and piano player and programmer Reidar Skar, vocalist/author Jon Fosse, and trumpet, flügelhorn, alto saxophone, vocalist, and tape looper Arve Henrickson.
