Biography
[Edit]Like many electronic music producers, Lord Runningclam first earned his musical stripes in the rock & roll scene. Back in those days, he went by his considerably less original but more utilitarian given name of David de Laski. He played with various rock bands on the East Coast before joining up with drummer Alex Spurkel, vocalist Roxanne Morganstern, and programmer James Lumb in Los Angeles and starting up Electric Skychurch, one of the frontrunners in the electro-fusion genre. When Skychurch was signed to Moonshine Records in the early '90s, de Laski found his permanent musical home. Several years later, he discovered his "alter ego" Lord Runningclam, a spaced-out, experimental groovester who creates trip-hop music for the psychedelic generation. Runningclam's first six-song EP, Fun for the Whole Family, was released in 1998 and received play in clubs and on alternative music programs around the world. Two of the tracks were released on vinyl a few months later. The artist's new moniker and new style caused critics and music fans some consternation, but most agree that this incarnation is interesting, though perhaps not quite appropriate for mass consumption. The fusion of beats, spoken word (contributed by Ken Nordine), and sound samples creates a progressive sound that appeals to musical intellectuals in the electronic and organic realms. ~ L.
