Biography

[Edit]

Nancy Apple grew up a navy brat, settling in Memphis, TN, in 1975 when her father retired. There she has built a career as a singer, songwriter, and musician, playing in the unique country, blues, and rock hybrid style of her adopted home. She first worked as a drummer in the 1980s in a succession of local punk and garage bands, notably the Ex-Wives, Tino and the Teetotalers, the Hellcats, and Apple/Sides, as well as being part of Willie Cobbs' backup band in 1988-89. She had a small part in the Jerry Lee Lewis biopic Great Balls of Fire! (1989) and the same year launched the Cadillac Cowgirls. Her first two recordings, Tijuana Tapes (1994) and Cadillac Cowgirl — High on the Hog (1996), were credited to Cadillac Cowgirl With Her Back Door Men. She led a band featured in the Cinemax film Finding Graceland, which premiered on the cable channel in May 1999. By 2000, she was serving as a volunteer DJ on WEVL in Memphis, hosting a weekly show called CarTunes, and as the Memphis music editor for America Online's Digital City Memphis. She released her first solo album, Outside the Lines, in early 2001.
