Biography

[Edit]

Los Angeles' One World was originally formed in 1985 and features members Frank Unzuenta (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano), Alandras "Oogie" Brown (vocals, percussion), Mithcell Chavez (electric guitar), Tom Pugliese (drums), Al Salsas (congas, percussion), and Rocco Presutti (acoustic and electric bass). The group combines several different dance styles into one, such as soca (an upbeat style that hails from Trinidad), as well as music of the Caribbean and Africa — which the members of One World describe as "Third World soul." September of 1991 saw the release of their debut single, "Spirits Beckon You," which enjoyed airplay on Los Angeles' KTWV The Wave. At this time, One World was primarily an instrumental band, which changed when the majority of the vocal duties were assigned to Brown (one of the first compositions that Unzuenta wrote for Brown to sing was "I Can't Let You Go"). The group has issued a pair of full-length albums thus far, 1995's Spirits Beckon You and 2001's L.A. Mambo, and on stage often enlists the help of the One World horns: saxophonist Dixie Dawkins, violinist/trombonist Dan Weinstein, and drummer/percussionist Burleigh Drummond. As for One World's future plans, Unzuenta predicts that One World will "keep making music, stay together, and spread our message of love and unity as long as we possibly can."
