Biography
[Edit]Born June 15, 1961, in Hillsboro, OR, musician Phil Haynes has made a name for himself in jazz circles as a talented drummer, producer, and composer. Haynes relocated to New York in 1984, moving into the Brooklyn Corner Store rehearsal space, which has seen such acclaimed musicians as Dave Douglas, Mark Feldman, Ellery Eskelin, Tim Berne, Don Byron, Herb Robertson, and Mark Dresser drop by and jam on numerous occasions. Shortly after becoming a New Yorker, Haynes began playing in the recording studio on a regular basis — he's appeared on over 30 albums — several as a leader for such labels as HatArt, JMT, Soul Note, Enja, Open Minds, Sound Aspects, and Nine Winds. Haynes has also served as the leader for several outfits, including 4 Horns and What?, 4 Horn Lore, Continuum, A Couch In Brooklyn, Joint Venture, the Phil Haynes-Herb Robertson Quintet, Phil Haynes & Free Country, Phil Haynes & the Hammond Insurgency, as well as issuing albums under his own name — Live Insurgency Set 1 and Live Insurgency Set 2.
