Biography

[Edit]

Preacher Jack was the alias of wildman pianist John Lincoln Coughlin, a self-taught performer with an encyclopedic knowledge of classic honky tonk, rockabilly and boogie-woogie. Earning a cult following during the 1960s and 1970s while enjoying an extended stay performing at a club in Boston's North Shore area, he eventually came to the attention of rocker George Thorogood, who helped him win a contract with Rounder Records. Preacher Jack debuted in 1980 with the LP Rock'n'Roll Preacher, followed in 1986 by 3000 Barrooms Later; while he did not record again for a decade, he remained a constant on the honky-tonk circuit, and by 1997 had earned enough of a cult following to return to the studio to cut Non-Stop Boogie.
