Biography

[Edit]

With a name equally inspired by David Sylvian and Lyra Silvertongue, the heroine of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials book series, Sylver Tongue is the electro-pop project of Charlotte Hatherley. After leaving her post as Ash's guitarist in 2006, Hatherley pursued her solo career in earnest, releasing two albums, 2007's Deep Blue (the follow-up to her 2004 debut, Grey Will Fade) and 2009's New Worlds. She also worked as a touring guitarist, first as a part of KT Tunstall's live band and then as part of Bat for Lashes' touring ensemble, while continuing to work on her own music. For Sylver Tongue, Hatherley drew inspiration not just from Sylvian's work but the music of Prince, David Bowie, and Grace Jones, as well as sci-fi and the sounds of her vintage Juno synth. She collaborated with producer James Rutledge on Sylver Tongue's debut EP, Something Big, which was released by Dancing Coins, a label from a musical collective that included Cold Specks' Al Spx as a member. Something Big arrived in November 2012, just before Sylver Tongue embarked on a tour with Bat for Lashes.
