Biography
[Edit]Yishka is the son of Teddy Greaves, a popular West Indies' entertainer. Born in Jamaica, his family moved to the Bahamas when he was two-years-old, and moved back to Jamaica when Yishka was in his late teens. A trumpet player, Yishka first sung before the public while accompanying his father at a hotel in Montego Bay. Later Yishka moved to Kingston and joined a band called the United Stars. It was with the United Stars that the musically gifted Yishka learned the saxophone. He joined a group led by Earl Smith a year later — Soul Syndicate — whose lead singer was Freddie McGregor. The band was very popular and shared stages, as the opening act, for some of Jamaica's greatest reggae bands.
The multi-skilled musician/singer began doing loads of session work. He moved to Miami, FL after three years in the studio and formed Roots Uprising where he played sax and did some lead vocals. Ian and Roger Lewis recorded two albums on Roots Uprising: Beautiful Music, and Magic City. He sung on an album with reggae group Happiness Unlimited discovered and produced by Stevie Wonder.
Homesick, Yishka returned to Jamaica in 1988 and continued to write; he joined a band called Skool, where he sang and played sax. A couple of years later he joined Riddim Force who did a one-year gig in Japan. Along with producer Phillip Roane's help, Yishka waxed his first solo CD entitled Yishka, the first of many such projects to come.
