Editorial Reviews

Something Special, this newest offering from Larry Vuckovich, creates a strong "Blue Note" flavor of soulful, swinging Jazz. The selections reflect the pianist's important early influences, honoring the Jazz masters who inspired him when he first began playing Jazz. Vuckovich runs his deft fingers across the keys on some rare compositions, such as Horace Silver's languid "Enchantment" and Sonny Clark's "Somethin' Special", the album's title track. He presents guest artist, classic tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, in a slightly different light from Scott's past recordings. Hamilton shines as he plays compositions of the Bebop masters, newly introduced to him, such as Dexter Gordon's "Cheese Cake", as well as the Clark piece, and the funk classic of Ben Tucker's "Comin' Home Baby". This studio recording developed out of a 2011 Northern California tour Vuckovich helped arrange for Hamilton. Tour in Bulgaria and Serbia, early August, 2011; Filoli Gardens, Woodside, August 28, 2011; Horizons Restaurant, Sausalito, August 31, 2011; Douglas Beach House, Half Moon Bay, September 3, 2011.

Larry Vucovich is a fine musical artist who consistently provides beautiful and interesting ideas in his recordings and live musical presentations; always well conceived and presented. Really knows what he is doing and does it all with constant style!

I discovered Larry Luckovich when a DJ played this album on a MI-NPR station on a show called "Take Five" broadcast on Saturday mornings. Fortunately they had a playlist that I could access on-line. I did and bought the album. It is one of my favorites and others have enjoyed it as well. Great background/dinner-party music.

Larry Vuckovich - SOMETHIN' SPECIAL: The liner notes pitch Larry's keyboard playing (with his partners Scott Hamilton (tenor sax), bassist Paul Keller & drummer Chuck McPherson, as well as tenor sax player Noel Jewkes) as having "a strong Blue-Note flavor, & nothing could be a more apt descriptor... just listen to the groove being projected on the 7:06 "Comin' Home, Baby" to grok why... excellent recording, excellent energy that will have you toe-tappin' (or more) in an instant! If you want to be reminded of the great ol' Horace Silver days, you'll dig deeply into the marvelous "How Insensitive" - I'm lovin' it - in fact, this is my favorite tune of the 11 Larry & crew offer up for your sonic joy! This August 16, 2011 release is one that any jazz fanatic won't be able to do without - it gets my MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an "EQ" rating of 4.98.
